Congressman’s ‘Mayor Libby Schaaf Act’ could imprison sanctuary officials
The Republican fury over Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf’s warning, months ago, about a federal immigration enforcement operation emerged Monday in the form of congressional legislation.
Rep. Steve King, Republican of Iowa, introduced the “Mayor Libby Schaaf Act of 2018,” which aims to punish officials who try to “obstruct, hinder, delay, or otherwise impede” law enforcement with up to five years in prison.
King, who has a history of making controversial and offensive comments about immigrants, said his bill aims to remove ambiguity over whether someone like Schaaf could be held criminally liable.
