The Dallas Cowboys aren't dead after all

Jason Garrett and the Cowboys made a statement Sunday night.

If it seems like it was only yesterday that it looked like the 2019 Dallas Cowboys were in trouble of being dead, it’s because it basically was. That’s what happens when you lose to the New York Jets for your third straight loss and that’s what happens when you’re the Dallas Cowboys, a franchise whose every up and down is taken to extremes by fans and media members.

But you know what? The Dallas Cowboys aren’t dead after all, which we learned by watching them destroy the rival Philadelphia Eagles in a Sunday night game that was never really close.

Dallas struck early in the first quarter thanks to a couple of turnovers and never looked back, winning 37-10 at home.

If you watched the game and thought “how’d this team lose to the Jets?” you weren’t alone. Last Sunday’s loss at MetLife was an embarrassment that had many people wondering if it was time to finally fire head coach Jason Garrett. This team has far too much talent to fall far behind the Jets and then have to rally to even give yourself a chance at a tie.

That team didn’t show up Sunday night. The Cowboys team from the first three weeks of the season did, as Dak Prescott and the offense clicked once again with the QB throwing for a TD and running for another. Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown. And Amari Cooper, who was injured for most of the Jets loss, had a big night with five catches for 106 yards.

The Cowboys’ defense was firing on all cylinders, too. Their pressure on Carson Wentz was relentless – the QB lost two fumbles and threw an INT – and it helped keep the Eagles from ever getting into any type of a groove.

And just like that. the Cowboys were once again looking like the team many think can be one of the top teams in the NFC and contend for a spot in the Super Bowl.

All that “fire Garrett” talk can quiet down a bit now after such a dominant performance in which it seemed like the players wanted to make a statement that they were prepared and ready to do something big, which they did.

Now they go into their bye week before going back to MetLife Stadium for a meeting a struggling Giants team in Week 9, which should be an easy win. They do, however, have some tough games remaining against the Vikings, Patriots, Bills, Bears, Rams, and Eagles down the stretch.

But maybe that loss to the Jets is exactly what they needed to get going. It sure seemed like it Sunday night.

– New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman had a good explanation for why he was smiling after giving up that HR to Altuve.
