As the union president of UAW Local 14 I have had a front row seat to the electric vehicle debate. Local 14 members have made transmissions in Toledo for over 90 years. The transition to EVs was not taken lightly. When making decisions to shift technology for our members our leadership weighed the pros and cons. The pros, most importantly, were not being left behind with a dying product while other facilities build the bridge to the future of the auto industry. The cons are that it takes fewer workers to manufacture EVs. Where I saw value was to pressure the administration to make better trade deals and incentivize work that would take place in our country. This would increase the amount of manufacturing done in the United States.
