Following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Luton Town boss Rob Edwards has said that no side in the Premier League presses their opponents high up the pitch better than Spurs do.

Luton gave an excellent account of themselves in the first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, taking the lead in just the third minute of the game and defending resolutely to keep the home side out.

While Spurs struggled to break down their opponents for much of the first period, they still had some golden opportunities, with Timo Werner putting the ball wide of the post when he was one-on-one with the goalkeeper while Son Heung-min’s effort somehow stayed out despite striking both posts.

Things shifted in the second half as the home side pressed with a lot more intensity, pinning Luton back, with Edwards’ men being forced into some last-ditch defending as Tottenham came flooding forward time and again.

Ange Postecoglou’s side did get their just reward, with an own goal from Issa Kabore on 56 minutes and a Son Heung-min strike on 86 minutes giving them all three points.

Luton manager impressed with Tottenham’s high press

Edwards insisted he was proud of the way his players competed, insisting that Spurs are up there with Liverpool as the best pressing team in the Premier League.

The Luton boss told Beanyman Sports: “I’ve got to give the [Luton] players so much credit. To be competitive with the amount of players missing, I think the lads deserve a lot of credit.

“The effort was there, played really well when we could. Tottenham, they press you and they react so well, they’re the best, probably right up there with Liverpool, with their quick regains and especially high up the pitch. It’s difficult to get out at times.”

A lot of Spurs fans appear to be scratching their heads as to why the side is playing poorly in the first half before turning it on in the second period as that is clearly a pattern this season.

However, I think that is simply because opposition teams work extremely hard to match our intensity for the first hour or so of the game but struggle to do so for the whole 90 minutes. That also explains why we score so many late goals.
