Carson Wentz Contract Extension Paints Clearer Picture on Mitch Trubisky
The Philadelphia Eagles weren’t wasting any more time. With Nick Foles gone, they wanted to make sure their quarterback position was stable long-term. To that extent, they secured starter Carson Wentz to a new extension. Four years will be added to his current deal. The money involved? Unsurprisingly extensive.
The new four years will encompass a total of $128 million with $107 million of it guaranteed. An incredible amount of cash. Some are shocked by it. While Wentz has shown he can be MVP-caliber when on the field, he’s also shown staying on it is a problem. Twice over the past two years, he’s seen his season come to an end due to injury.
It is becoming hard to know if his body can withstand the rigors of a long NFL career. Perhaps the Eagles have some crafty ways they can get out of the contract sooner. Maybe not. One thing that is clear is the Chicago Bears now have a further idea of the levels of money they’ll venture into with Mitch Trubisky in the next year or two.
Carson Wentz may prove to be the floor for Mitch Trubisky
As things stand, Wentz will be making $32 million per year. This is the reality of the NFL. Quarterbacks are king. Even the non-elite ones are getting paid ridiculous money. Trubisky will be in that conversation soon enough. It comes down to how high he is able to drive the price. Much of that could be answered this coming season.
Right now Trubisky isn’t at a level that will garner that much money. He did reach a Pro Bowl but his numbers were bit on the good-not-great side. Wentz was playing like an MVP in 2017 and doing well last year too before the injuries struck. That was enough to convince the Eagles to strike now. Pace has remained steadfast in his belief of Trubisky.
It is reasonable to assume that he might take a similar course in 2020 if his young QB steps up this year. That means picking up the 5th year option on his rookie deal and then adding another four years on the end of it. This way the Bears can manage their cap better long-term while Trubisky still gets his massive payday. Everybody wins.
