According to David Kaplan, not only are the Cubs calling up Addison Russell before tonight’s series finale against the Marlins, but they’re going to be without Ben Zobrist and Daniel Descalso.
The Cubs originally had Zobrist in the lineup Tuesday night, but he was then scratched because of a personal issue.
So far this season Zobrist is slashing .241/.343/.253. The switch-hitting veteran only has one extra base hit in 83 at-bats.
Meanwhile, Daniel Descalso has been dealing with an ankle injury and has been relegated to pinch-hitting duties lately. He suffered the injury during Saturday’s game against the Cardinals.
Descalso started off hot with the Cubs, but has cooled off in the past couple weeks. The lefty is hitting .250/.337/.381, with two home runs in 29 games.
The Cubs could bring up Ian Happ as well. He’s been playing much better at Triple-A since struggling early in the year.
Anyway, it appears as though Addison Russell will play with the Cubs again. He just finished serving a 40-game suspension for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy. The league first began to investigate allegations in 2017 and then interviewed Russell’s ex-wife Melisa Reidy and other witnesses in 2018 after she wrote about the abuse during their marriage last September.
As for Zobrist, he may not be going on the injured list. Maybe he’ll go on the bereavement list, which means he’ll be away from the team for a maximum of seven days.
