Manaea terrific in A’s win; Graveman, Hahn DL candidates
NEW YORK — Oakland’s injury situation is nearing crisis level, with starting pitchers Kendall Graveman and Jesse Hahn probably headed to the disabled list in the next day or two and first baseman Yonder Alonso missing from the starting lineup Friday.
Sean Manaea stepped up with seven scoreless innings in the A’s 4-1 win over the AL East-leading Yankees.
Manaea walked Brett Gardner to start the first, then retired seven in a row and didn’t walk another batter in his first career start at Yankee Stadium.
Much of the game, Manaea was locked in a terrific duel with New York’s Masahiro Tanaka, who entered with a 6.56 ERA but struck out a career-high 13 in 71/3 innings.
“For him to come out and throw the way he did — Tanaka was outstanding, and Manaea matched him,” catcher Stephen Vogt said.
Former A’s reliever Tyler Clippard took over, and although he got Rajai Davis to hit a bouncer to third that erased Adam Rosales at home, Clippard walked Matt Joyce before Jed Lowrie delivered an RBI single, his third hit of the game.
Khris Davis sent in another run with an infield single to deep short, hustling to first to beat the throw from Didi Gregorius.
Vogt added a two-run homer in the ninth off Jonathan Holder.
According to a team source, Daniel Mengden is expected to take the second rotation opening.
Alonso, who was struck on the right wrist by a pitch Tuesday, hit off a tee, did defensive work and threw before Friday’s game.
