Heavy rains in the Dominican Republic have killed one child, damaged thousands of homes and are causing power outages, forcing officials to suspend classes at some public and private schools. The government on Wednesday also ordered nonessential employees to work remotely as authorities warned of flooding and possible landslides. Local newspaper Listín Diario reported that more than 20 communities were cut off in a province just northwest of the capital Santo Domingo after a river overflowed its banks. Crews in the capital rescued one man who became trapped in a sewer and evacuated nearly a dozen older people to safety. The heavy rains began Monday and are expected to dwindle by Wednesday night.
