A Hong Kong court has sentenced the father of a U.S.-based activist to eight months in prison in the first case brought against the relative of a pro-democracy activist wanted by the city's authorities under a national security law. Kwok Yin-sang was accused of trying to cash out an insurance policy he previously took out in the name of his daughter Anna Kwok, executive director of the Washington-based Hong Kong Democracy Council. Authorities have placed a bounty on Anna and banned people from handling funds that belong to her. She is among 34 people targeted by police bounties, widely seen as part of a crackdown on dissent that followed massive protests in 2019. Hong Kong and Beijing defend the security law as needed for the city's stability.
