McLeod Bethel-Thompson, 49ers reunited
Balboa High School offensive coordinator McLeod Bethel-Thompson was putting a game plan together Sunday when his cell phone rang.
[...] suddenly, he went from preparing for Mission High to readying for a return to the NFL.
On Tuesday, the 49ers signed him to their practice squad.
On Wednesday, Bethel-Thompson spoke to a group of reporters and was clearly thrilled to continue a winding four-team, five-season NFL career that has included four stints with the 49ers.
A decade after he played for the school, he returned shortly after the Dolphins released him from their practice squad Sept. 9.
Balboa athletic director Val Kubales was thrilled to have an NFL-quarterback alum join the staff.
Bethel-Thompson initially was consumed with constructing Balboa’s offense, but he quickly became immersed in his players’ lives.
In the offseason, he’ll work out at Balboa and stay connected to his players, many of whom have dysfunctional family lives.
The only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster are Blaine Gabbert and Dylan Thompson, an undrafted rookie from South Carolina.
Bethel-Thompson figures he owes the Buccaneers for skipping out days before the city championship.
The 49ers made room for Armstrong on the roster by placing defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey (torn ACL) on injured reserve. …
Linebacker Ahmad Brooks is in the concussion protocol after he reported a headache at some point after the loss in Seattle on Sunday. …
Running back Carlos Hyde (foot) didn’t practice Wednesday and is likely to miss his fourth straight game Sunday.
Head coach Jim Tomsula said Wednesday he hasn’t had any conversations with members of the front office about his long-term future with the team.
Tomsula, who was promoted in January after spending the previous eight seasons as the 49ers defensive line coach, said he’s focused on Sunday’s game against Arizona at Levi’s Stadium, not his job status.
