Giants scout who signed Bobby Bonds, Jack Clark, many others, dies
According to Taylor, Mr. Genovese signed 250 players for the Giants, 44 of whom reached the majors.
Besides Bonds, Foster, Clark and Williams, Mr. Genovese also signed Gary Matthews, Garry Maddox, Chili Davis, Dave Kingman and Royce Clayton.
The Professional Baseball Scouts Association presents an annual lifetime achievement award.
George was able to look at guys like George Foster, who didn’t play high school baseball as a senior; Garry Maddox, a tall, lanky kid who was playing second base; Chili Davis, who was catching; and Jack Clark, who was pitching.
Mr. Genovese also had a reputation for working with high school players, even throwing batting practice, and getting to know them off the field.
Born in New York, Mr. Genovese’s major-league player career consisted of two plate appearances with the Washington Senators in 1950.
Two years later, he became a manager in the Pirates’ farm system, working for legendary executive Branch Rickey.
