Last-place New Jersey routs NHL-leading Washington
Nico Hischier scored twice, Louis Domingue made 33 saves and the last-place New Jersey Devils routed the NHL-leading Capitals 5-1 Saturday night in Washington to snap a three-game losing streak.
Hischier’s 11th and 12th goals came on the same night the 2017 top pick missed out on a last-chance All-Star invite. Fans voted in Washington’s T.J. Oshie instead.
Blake Coleman scored a short-handed goal, and Nikita Gusev added one moments after a power play ended for the Devils. Hischier and Coleman were the two best skaters on the ice, and behind them Domingue had a strong performance facing a ton of shots in his sixth start of the season.
“We know what kind of team we are, I know what kind of player I am, so I’ve just got to try to keep skating and some things will open up,” Hischier said.
Lightning 1, Flyers 0: Pat Maroon scored in the second period and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 23 saves for his 20th career shutout as visiting Tampa Bay tied a club record with its 10th straight win. Maroon left the game after he was hooked by Kevin Hayes and went barreling into the back boards two minutes into the third period. He grabbed his right shoulder and headed to the bench before going to the locker room. Maroon was sporting an ice pack on his right shoulder afterward.
Blue Jackets 3, Golden Knights 0: Elvis Merzlikins made 27 saves for his first career shutout as visiting Columbus improved to 11-2-4 since Dec. 9.
Flames 4, Oilers 3: Elias Lindholm scored twice and host Calgary won its fifth straight to move into first place in the Pacific Division, one point ahead of Arizona and Vegas.
