One person died in a multi-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 680 in Pleasanton early Saturday, officials said. The crash, which occurred shortly after 6 a.m., blocked all lanes of traffic just south of the Stoneridge Drive exit for nearly 15 minutes, the California Highway Patrol said. (AP) — A University of Florida student is in legal trouble after an alligator hide was found drying in his fraternity house's backyard. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said 22-year-old Cristov Dosev was charged with illegal possession of an alligator skin after the discovery.

Sheriff's deputies are seeking suspects in connection with a burglary, after an 83-year-old Saratoga woman reported a box filled with her late husband's ashes missing Friday. Around 11:35 a.m., deputies responded to the 10000 block of Howen Drive for a report of an interrupted burglary, according to sheriff's officials.

University professor testing foreign grain in Virginia soil (AP) — A Virginia State University professor is researching a foreign superfood grain that may soon be taking global markets by storm. (AP) — Authorities in western Oregon say a sheriff's deputy responding to a call was shot and injured, and a manhunt is underway for the assailant. Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Greg Rice says in a news release that deputies were responding to a report of shots fired when they found a man armed with a gun.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is announcing a $300 million program to drastically reduce HIV infections in girls and young woman in 10 sub-Saharan African nations hard hit by the virus. Officials say targeting HIV prevention in young woman is a crucial step toward stopping the spread of the virus. According to the administration, 380,000 adolescent girls and young women are infected with HIV each year — more than 1,000 every day.

Gaskin told Television New Zealand it was "very, very lucky" that all 11 students didn't die after they were struck by strong winds that swamped their vessels and thrust them into the frigid lake water. Monash University said in a statement that the college community was "deeply saddened" by the deaths and that it had sent a senior manager to New Zealand to assist the surviving students.
