Police are actively searching for suspects in relation to a shooting that took place in uptown Minneapolis. Early Sunday morning, authorities arrived on scene where 12 adults were found suffering from gunshot wounds.
One of the victims later died in the hospital, while the remaining 11 sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo called the incident an act of “senseless gun violence” and offered his condolences to those who were impacted by the attack. He spoke about how community members and officers came together to assist in getting the wounded to hospitals, which he said inspired him.
“We saw officers and community members rushing to aid those victims,” he explained. “…We saw humanity last night and that really, truly inspires me and says that hope is here in our city and will remain here in our city.”
He went on to say the department will bring all resources to bear to bring those responsible to justice. The police chief said he has spoken with state agencies and the local FBI, which will be assisting in investigation efforts.
“Our community has been so good in bringing us information forward,” he said. “We absolutely do have several leads in that, and certainly our homicide investigative teams are taking up on those leads.”
According to the Arradondo, gun violence is ongoing issue within the Minneapolis community. He emphasized that the crime was not committed in response to the death of George Floyd, which has sparked protests and unrest across the country in recent weeks.
“We have seen, unfortunately, over the past several months an uptick in violent crime in Minneapolis,” he added. “We are certainly doing our best to address that.”
