EFCC recovers N57m from missing Niger state ecological fund

The EFCC has recovered the sum of N57m from some individuals who tempered with the ecological fund allocated to Niger state. A source stated that key witnesses in the on-going trial returned parts of the missing fund.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered the sum of N57m from some individuals who tempered with ecological fund allocated to Niger state.

Daily Trust, citing a source, reports that key witnesses in the on-going trial over the matter at the Minna Federal High Court returned parts of the missing fund.

Among those standing trial for the alleged laundering of the ecological fund to the tune of N2 billion include former governor of the state Muazu Babaginda Aliyu and a commissioner of environment during the administration, Umar Nasko.

NAIJ.com learnt that one of the witnesses during the on-going trial recently refunded some money, leaving an outstanding sum which he promised to return in due course.

So far, the sum of N57 million has been recovered from five people who were directly involved in the saga, the source stated.

Meanwhile, a report by the EFCC has detailed how the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, allegedly received N250m from the office of the National Security Adviser under the leadership of the embattled former (NSA) Col Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

Secondus was said to have allegedly received the money during the build-up to the 2015 general elections, when served as the deputy chairman (south) of the PDP at the time, The Punch citing a copy of the report stated.

The document further alleged that the funds were approved by Col Sambo Dasuki (retd.) for unknown reasons but were merely referred to as special duties.

The EFCC also said an oil magnate standing trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja, Babajide Omokore gave out vehicles worth about N1.1bn to Secondus and ex-chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, as well as the lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom north-east senatorial district, Senator Bassey Akpan.
