Would going back to ‘square one’ be such a bad thing?

In MetroTalk: What exactly is Rishi Sunak's plan and can it rival going back to 'square one'?

Prime minister Rishi Sunak has called a general election for July 4th and readers are sharing their thoughts.

During his rather wet, speech he mentioned his plan and Keir Starmer’s lack of one, but readers in today’s MetroTalk, aren’t exactly sure what his plans are.

He did say however, that electing Labour would take the country back to ‘square one’. But, as one reader points out, would that be such a bad thing?

Share your thoughts on these topics and more in the comments.

Rishi's 'plan' vs Labour's 'square one'

Rishi Sunak is forever banging on about his ‘plan’. He doesn’t tell us what his ‘plan’ is. Why doesn’t somebody
ask him?

Meanwhile, he claims that Labour will take us back to ‘square one’.

Square one is presumably when the Conservatives took over from Labour in 2010. How were things back at so-called square one?

The NHS was doing well – low waiting lists, no striking doctors.

National debt was low. Inflation was around two per cent. There were no front pages about people in ‘boats’.

Tax allowances were rising. There were no striking rail workers, no striking teachers.

The six-days-a-week post service was not under threat. There was seamless trade and travel throughout Europe. Barack Obama was US president.

Chelsea were Premier League champions, so life wasn’t perfect.

As Rishi won’t tell us the ‘plan’, let’s go back to ‘square one’. Barry Tighe, Woodford Green

Votes for Reform UK

Reform UK Respond To Quarterly Migration Figures At General Election Campaign Launch

Only by voting Reform UK will we be able to restore and protect UK sovereignty. Reform UK will also stop the illegal boat crossings and significantly reduce legal immigration. Mark Richards, Brighton

Anyone intending to vote for any of the renegade Tory MPs standing as candidates for the Reform Party should be aware that, in doing so, they will be ensuring that Sir Keir Starmer gets the keys to No.10. A vote for Reform is, in effect, a vote for Labour. And a vote for Labour is a vote for chaos. Bob Readman, Sevenoaks

Labour started the NHS could they rebuild it?

The last July election was in 1945, when a Labour government came into power and created the NHS.

Over 14 years, this government has destroyed the NHS, so it seems only right that they should leave in July for a new government to try to rebuild the NHS and the country.

They certainly cannot do a worse job than the Tories. Corin, London

Dear current or future government, don’t you dare let failing water companies raise their bills above inflation when they are pocketing money from huge profits.

Voters are watching. Red, Ruislip

Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, soaked with rain, returns to 10 Downing Street after delivers a speech to announce the date of the UK's next general election, in central London, on May 22, 2024. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday set a general election date for July 4, ending months of speculation about when he would go to the country. The vote -- the third since the Brexit referendum in 2016 and the first in July since 1945 -- comes as Sunak seeks to capitalise on better economic data to woo voters hit by cost-of-living rises. I’m sure that, like me, the majority of people watching Rishi Sunak announce the election date outside 10 Downing Street in the rain were shouting, ‘Where is your umbrella!?’ Sara, Cheltenham

I have heard of people who are too stupid to come in out of the rain but this was the first time I have seen it demonstrated at a lectern outside 10 Downing Street. Martin, London

Reading on public transport and Paula Vennells evidence

Jess (MetroTalk, Wed) mentions being able to read on the Tube before mobile phones were used on it. I read a lot on buses before the mobile phone fad. Phones contribute to the destruction of the planet as well, so I think a backlash is on its way. Chas, London

Why do good people do bad things? Hearing ordained priest Paula Vennells give evidence at the Post Office inquiry (Metro, Thu), it’s clear that corporate culture in the UK is deeply flawed. Neil Dance, Birmingham

Moral warriors who refuse vaccines put others at risk

Robin is a vegan and so doesn’t have vaccines because they are tested on animals (MetroTalk, Thu).

I’d like to see them put their money where their mouth is and offer themselves to be the subject of vaccination testing.

Our loved ones are alive today because a little rat in a lab helped develop a medicine or vaccine to save them.

When your unvaccinated body becomes host for a disease that people can’t get vaccinated for, either because they are too young have a weakened immune system or allergies, then you become a problem.

We eradicated diseases that killed people before they turned 30 but these are coming back because of wannabe moral warriors like yourself. Selina, London

Sometimes ‘a big stick’ is needed to avoid conflict

Theodore Roosevelt
Words of wisdom? (Picture: Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

Kath (MetroTalk, Thu) says governments should focus on diplomacy rather than increase defence spending.

They do constantly try to find diplomatic solutions and we all know war isn’t the first or second resort, but the last. What do you think the Israelis and Palestinians have been doing for decades (before, during and after the occasional conflict?).

To say ‘children and women suffer the most’ in war is ridiculous, as if somehow male combatants and bystanders are somehow unaffected. Everyone suffers.
History teaches us that showing weakness or appeasement to dictators is
a guaranteed recipe for conflict.

As Roosevelt said, ‘Speak softly and carry a big stick – you will go far.’ Paul, London
