‘Does Prince Harry’s healing journey come before his family’s dignity?’

Should Harry put his 'healing' before his nearest and dearest? Have your say.

What’s got readers talking (Picture: Reuters/Getty/Rex/Metro.co.uk)

The saga of Prince Harry and his explosive bare-all memoir Spare continues to be the main subject in our inbox after it helped start off 2023 with a bang.

We’ve had responses, mainly criticism but some praise, about the Duke of Sussex’s confessions that are said to have caused strife within the royal family – following his departure from The Firm with wife Meghan Markle.

Also in Metro readers’ firing line is the government over health secretary Steve Barclay’s proposal to build temporary A&Es. They argue that many A&E departments shouldn’t have shut down in the first place.

Read on to see what else people are writing to us about.

‘Undignified to run from media before exposing family secrets for money’

■ Regarding the release of Prince Harry’s controversial memoir, Spare, and specifically his criticisms about his family, Melanie Freeman (MetroTalk, Wed) defends him by saying that ‘real love strives for truth’ – that the truth may hurt but Harry’s motivation is good.

She is right but there is a difference between explaining decisions you’re making and insulting family, exposing matters that shouldn’t go public and hurting people who are your family. Also, running from the media and then exposing the truth through the media and being paid for this – that’s below dignity. I mean, how low can you go? Maya, Kent

■ Harry’s ‘healing journey’, as he calls it, will be so damaging to his children. Has he learnt nothing? I have protected my kids from vile family stuff for three decades and will continue to do so until I draw my final breath. Protective Mum, West Yorkshire

■ To Melanie, while I share your belief in freedom of speech, I disagree that Harry is trying to protect his family. Quite the contrary, given – for example – the revelations about the number of Taliban he says he killed during his Afghanistan operations, and the fact that he is the one completely exposing his personal life and family in the media.

Surely if he really wants to protect his family, as Melanie claims is his intention, then he would be better off out of all this spectacle. Pedro, Hammersmith

■ Melanie says Harry just wants to change a corrupt system and protect his family. Doesn’t she realise he could have done that without publicly attacking and trying to humiliate the monarchy? Scott, West London

■ We could all buy a trilogy of books written by the Duke of Sussex, titled Spare, Pair and Hot Air. Pauline, Warrington

■ I’m as likely to read Harry’s book as I am to read the Bible. Both are full of non-truths. The word ‘delusional’ springs to mind. I wonder if Harry and his wife can find a ‘buy one, get one free’ therapist course? Amanda H, Leeds

■ Anyone who has served in the military and/or security services knows you never refer to your enemy as ‘chess pieces’ – as Harry described the Taliban he killed – and place yourself at additional, unnecessary risk. Dominic Shelmerdine, London

■ What Harry needs is simply a sharp wake-up kick in the backside. Margaret Milner, Archway

■ I’m eagerly awaiting Prince Harry –The Musical. Andrea, London

■ Prince Harry has sold something his vast wealth can’t buy: his soul. Sara Brown, Cheltenham

■ I’m also not the least bit interested in Harry or Meghan, or any of the so-called royal family. What I can’t understand is why some people hold them up as some sort of superior beings. When are we as a country going to grow up, get off our knees and get shot of the lot of them? The sooner, the better. Joe Fitzgerald, Maghull

‘Stop shutting A&Es and don’t put striking NHS staff in your firing line’

■ Instead of building temporary A&Es (Metro, Tue), why doesn’t the health secretary Steve Barclay reopen all the A&Es his party has closed over the past years? Martin, London

■ I live in north-west London and the Tories have closed four A&E departments in my area. How can they justify this vandalism of a national asset? Tony, Uxbridge

■ I don’t recognise the TUC general secretary Paul Nowak’s philosophy of ‘Conservative ministers have gone from clapping key workers to sacking key workers’. This is utter nonsense – these NHS strikes are risking lives.

Also, the train strikes are risking livelihoods, with people on zero-hour contracts not being paid or being ‘let go’ through no fault of their own. How on earth is that fair to the public? Bring on measures that have powers to sack strikers – and give the jobs to the less greedy. Geoff Hall, Croydon

■ Does our government really think it acts in the best interest of the people? It seems happy to target NHS workers and see them sacked following the introduction of the ‘life and limb’ bill –to ban strikes stopping vital services – but is not willing to pursue those who have failed to pay £42billion in taxes that are due (Metro, Wed) or chase up the money lost to fraud during the pandemic. Keith Lowe, Oldham

‘Climate activists need to talk about space tourism’

■ The UK’s first satellite launch mission, from Cornwall Airport Newquay, has ended in failure (Metro, Wed). This had me wondering about emissions from rockets, and how they may affect the climate. I found a 2022 study lead-authored by Dr Robert Ryan.

The environmental findings of the study are disturbing. The warming efficiency of space tourism soot emissions is about 500 times greater than surface and aircraft sources of soot. And ozone depletion caused by the launches undermines the Montreal Protocol. Isn’t it odd that the climate protest groups and influential individuals who regularly speak on climate are keeping quiet about this? Geoff Moore, Alness, Highland

And another thing…

■ Further to comments about sod’s law (MetroTalk, Wed). You will always try to connect the USB cable for your phone charger the wrong way round. The more careful you are not to shake a can, the more likely it is to fizz up when you open it. Matthew, Birmingham

■ AH from Leeds (MetroTalk, Wed) praises people in the north for thanking bus drivers. This does happen in London, but the bus is usually packed with people. You’d be yelling at the top of your voice in people’s ears to be heard – and a chorus of it from everyone would be ridiculous. Joe, by email
