What time is the US vice presidential debate tonight and how can you watch it in the UK?
Tonight marks the most important vice presidential debate in history.
The US vice presidential debate between Republican candidate Mike Pence and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris will be broadcast tonight.
The vice presidential debate holds a great deal of significance this year, as President Trump is currently battling Covid-19 just weeks before the election on November 3.
This could be the final debate of the campaign, depending on whether the president recovers in time.
Additionally, if Biden wins the election, then Kamala Harris would become the first-ever female US vice president.
But what time does the historical debate start, and who would take over from Vice President Mike Pence if he became unable to fulfil his duties?
What time does the US vice presidential debate start?
The vice presidential debate starts tonight at 9pm ET (2am BST).
The debate will last for 90 minutes, and is hosted by USA Today’s Susan Page.
All the major US news channels, including NBC, ABC, C-SPAN, CBS and Fox News will show the debate.
UK viewers can stream it live on Apple TV, Amazon Prime as well as on the YouTube channels of many US news outlets such as ABC News.
It will also be broadcast on the BBC news channel.
Who are vice presidential candidates Mike Pence and Kamala Harris?
The candidate for the Republican party is current Vice President Mike Pence.
Pence is a 61-year-old Christian from Indiana. Pence has been historically loyal to Trump, and the pair are ideologically aligned.
The Democratic candidate is Kamala Harris, who is currently the Senator of California.
The 55-year-old lawyer hopes to become the first female vice president in US history.
Who would succeed President Donald Trump if Pence was unable to do so?
If President Donald Trump is incapacitated by his illness, then Vice President Mike Pence would take over.
The 25th Amendment states that the vice president should replace the commander-in-chief in the event he or she is unable to continue the term.
If Mike Pence is unable to fulfil the role, then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will take over.
Who will take over as the Republic candidate if Trump becomes too sick?
There is currently nothing to suggest that Trump will pull out of the race, however, in the event of that happening, the Republican National Committee (RNC) could choose to nominate the vice-presidential candidate or another member of their party.
All 168 members of the RNC would have to meet to vote on Trump’s replacement.
No presidential candidate has ever withdrawn before an election.
The two remaining presidential debates are:
- October 15 in Miami, Florida
- October 11 in Nashville, Tennessee
