More than 100,000 people have now died of coronavirus worldwide

It comes after the UK recorded its deadliest day yet, with another 980 people losing their lives to Covid-19.

The worldwide death toll linked to coronavirus has hit 100,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

Figures show at least 100,376 people have died from Covid-19, while more than 1.6 million have been infected globally.

Italy has seen the most deaths, followed by the US and Spain.

Europe is starting an unprecedented Easter weekend under lockdown. The Italian PM announced today that restrictions on movement will be extended until May 3, while Ireland announced an extension until May 5.

The UK government has not said when lockdown will end, but it is likely to be extended.

However he warned against being overly optimistic, pointing out that while cases in London were dropping, they are rising elsewhere in the country.

Meanwhile, Donald Trumps said he believes the US will see fewer than 100,000 deaths. He admitted the figure was ‘horrible’ but said things could have been far worse if it were not for what he called ‘an aggressive counter strategy’.

But there are some hopeful signs amidst all the grim news.

• Spain recorded its lowest number of daily coronavirus deaths in 17 days, though the figure – 605 – could be incomplete because of the public holiday, analysts say.
• From Monday Spain’s lockdown – one of the strictest in the world – will be slightly eased, with builders and some other non-essential workers able to back to work and masks being made available for people using public transport.
• The tight lockdown in Italy also appears to be working: its latest 24-hour death toll is 570, continuing a declining trend.
