‘Concerning’ rise in number of cars being used under lockdown
'The message here is people really do need to stay at home.'
There has been a rise in the number of people driving despite the lockdown, with people told to leave the car and stay at home.
The increase in use of motor vehicles was ‘slightly concerning’, Dr Yvonne Doyle, Director for Health Protection and Medical Director, told today’s Downing Street press conference.
She said: ‘The message here is people really do need to stay at home.
‘Most are doing the right thing as you can see from the rapid decline in public transport use.
‘So everyone needs to do that.
‘The message here is we need to save lives and protect the NHS so please stay at home.’
The UK remains under lockdown due to coronavirus, with people told they should only leave their homes for work, essential shopping, medical reasons or to exercise.
Pubs and bars have been closed while non-essential shops have also been shut.
