Teenager, 19, with no underlying health conditions among 393 killed by coronavirus

The UK coronavirus death toll has today reached 1,801 after nearly 400 people were confirmed to have died of the infection.

A teenager with no underlying health conditions has died of coronavirus in England.

In total, 1,801 people across Britain have died of the infection, with 393 new deaths confirmed today – the biggest daily rise the UK has seen yet.

The NHS confirmed 367 of those deaths were in England and all those who died were in hospital. Their ages ranged from 19 to 98.

All but 28 of the patients had underlying health conditions but of the 28 who did not, they were aged between 19 and 91, the NHS said. Their families have been informed.

In Scotland, 13 more deaths have been recorded. A further seven people have died in Wales, while Northern Ireland has recorded six more deaths today.

Today’s jump in deaths is the biggest daily increase since the outbreak began, following a rise of 180 deaths yesterday and 209 on Sunday.

Earlier, the Office for National Statistics released new figures which suggest the true death toll from Covid-19 could be 20% higher than official figures have shown.

According to the new figures, a total of 210 deaths in England and Wales that occurred up to and including March 20 had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.

This compares with 170 coronavirus-related deaths reported by NHS England and Public Health Wales up to and including March 20.

The ONS figures are based on deaths registered in a given week, whereas the official toll is based on deaths occurring among hospital patients in a given week.

It comes as officials and health workers continue to plead with the public to stay at home unless absolutely necessary.
