Rio de Janeiro is ready for Olympic Games. Many things will happen for the first time during the most important sports event that is to be held in this city.

The first Olympiad in South America
“As in any competition, here too there’s only one winner. I have the honour to announce that the 31st Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro,” stated IOC President Jacques Rogge at the session in Copenhagen in 2009.
In fact, Brazil became the first South American country that got the right to organize Olympic Games.
Brazilian team were so happy they began to sing Rio’s anthem “Cidade Maravilhosa” (Wonderful City).

According to the organizers, the Games belong to all South America: “Our continent will host such an important event for the first time, and fans will definitely not regret coming here. Rio will hold the most unforgettable games.”
Rio is the second Latin-American city after Mexico in 1968 to host Olympic Games. Thus, excluding Antarctica, Africa remains the only continent that hasn’t held Olympic Games yet.
New sports in Rio
Sports lovers will see golf and rugby-7 in Rio in 2016.
Rugby and golf were chosen by a voting.

Rugby made debut in 1900 and was last played in the Olympics in 1924. Golf returns after 112 years of absence. Both men and women will compete in golf.
New countries in the Olympiad
Record 306 medals will be played at the Games in Brazil, and 206 countries are expected to participate. Athletes from Kosovo and South Sudan will perform in the Olympic Games for the first time.

IOC is sure that sport is the best way to bring peace, and they try to help solve current confrontations.
Refugees team in Rio
The team of 5-10 refugees and immigrants will take part in Rio Olympic Games for the first time. The team will perform under the flag and anthem of International Olympic Committee.

IOC wants to draw the attention of the whole world to the issue of refugees, whose number reached 60 million.
Traditionally, Greek team will walk the first during the Parade of Nations at the opening of Olympic Games, and the refugees’ team will be the last.
