Pashinyan: Syunik is not cut off from Armenia
“In the parts that the maps of the Soviet Union indicated as outside the territory of Soviet Armenia - it is a 21km section, the Azerbaijanis blocked the road and claimed it was a response to an incident that allegedly took place last night. The Azerbaijanis claim that some people from the Armenian side stabbed the Azerbaijani border guards. We officially refute that claim. If Azerbaijan has any evidence, we call on Baku to hand it us over so that we can investigate. What happened contradicts the Ministry of Defense statement made in 2020, according to which the 21-kilometer section of the Goris-Kapan highway, “which passes through the disputed area,” will be secured by Russian border guards,” he said.
Pashinyan has stated that Syunik is not cut off from Armenia.
“We have predicted such situations, and we have planned our work in a way as to regulate and guarantee traffic. The North-South road will solve this issue strategically, but not completely. Work is underway on improving the roads in Shurnukh and Vorotan communities, which we will accelerate now,” he said.
The Prime Minister has added that the statements coming from Azerbaijan are aimed at damaging and diverting the regional peace agenda, put forward by Armenia.
“We need very strong nerves; it is impossible to create a fully stable environment in a day, or an hour, or 6-7 months. That is why the government program states that the primary task is to stabilize the situation around Armenia and Artsakh. This is a clear indication of our challenges, but we must make it clear that we are moving forward with a peace agenda. We are reforming our armed forces not to conquer territories, but to defend our sovereign territory. We have no aggressive intentions towards any state in our region,” he said.
