5/10/15: Medvedev’s message, Putin-Obama conversation, Sargsyan-Kerry meeting

Today we live in a society, which cannot imagine life without expressing views on social media. Probably it does have certain advantages. Nevertheless, many participants of active discussions have already forgotten or do not even know about the developments, which unfolded in Armenia 5, 10 or 15 years ago.

To fill in the gap Mediamax presents 5/10/15 project, which introduces developments in Armenia 5, 10 and 15 years ago.

“We won’t return the territories before NKR recognition”

On July 7, Defense Minister of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) Seyran Ohanyan said in Stepanakert that “we are not going to return the territories which make the security belt for us before the NKR recognition.”

Ohanyan noted that the Karabakhi side favors only the peaceful settlement of the conflict “but Azerbaijan has imposed war on us and we had to resolve the problem in a military way.”

According to the Minister, “the territories under Nagorno Karabakh are not an end in itself, they serve as a security zone for the peaceful life of the republic.”

Ohanyan pointed out that issues of territories and deployment of the international peacekeeping contingent might be considered only at the last stage of the settlement after the resolution of the main problem - determination of Nagorno Karabakh’s status.

“There can be no speculations about the return of territories unless the basic issue of the settlement is resolved,” the NKR Defense Minister said.

“If the aggressors start thinking of a new adventure”

On July 9, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said that “if the aggressors start thinking of a new adventure, we will come out stronger again”.

“During the recent war, all fortifications collapsed because of attacks of Armenian warriors. The strength of those attacks was spreading panic and disappointment in the enemy’s forces. We regularly saw the rear of the irregularly running enemy”, Serzh Sargsyan said.

“We won in a continuous, most difficult and unbalanced war. Some, while saying “unbalanced war”, meant the fact that Azerbaijan had more means, equipment and live force. This is true, but for me the war was unbalanced, because the strong side was against the weak one, and the strong side was us. The freedom-loving one was fighting against the aggressor, and we were the freedom-loving one. The fair was fighting against the unfair and we were the embodiment of the fair.

Today we support peace, but if the aggressors start thinking of a new adventure, I don’t doubt a second that there will be lack of balance again, and we once again will be the strong one, since the defender of the ancestral home and the homeland is invincible”, Armenian President said.

“Exaggeration”

On July 9, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan described as “exaggeration” the talks about international pressure in the Karabakh settlement process.

“The process continues and we are keeping to a constructive stance in it. Everyone knows that: some of them support us, and others try to criticize. However, it is not that important. Important is the fact that talks about pressure are exaggerated. OSCE Minsk Group Co-chair countries try to make the stances of all sides of the conflict – Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan – closer. This process proceeds with difficulty, but we did not even expect it to have an easy solution. Our stance is known and it is perceived by the other side with difficulty. We will do everything for a fair solution. The stronger you are, the more combat-efficient our Army will be and our negotiation stance will have a better standing,” said the President.

“Time to come to agreement”

On July 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov unveiled the essence of Dmitry Medvedev’s message sent to presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“I delivered the message of Dmitry Medvedev to presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Yerevan and Baku. The essence is - it’s time to come to agreement. We are waiting for a response,” Sergey Lavrov twitted.

Putin and Obama talked about NK

Presidents of Russia and Unites States, Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama, discussed Nagorno-Karabakh peace process in a phone conversation that took place on July 6 upon the initiative of the Russian side.

“The President of Russia informed his American counterpart, as a Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, of the results of the trilateral meeting with the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia, in St. Petersburg on June 20. Vladimir Putin emphasized that Russia organized the talks to help stabilize the situation in the conflict zone as soon as possible and create conditions for progress in the peace process. Barack Obama praised Russia’s efforts, and the leaders agreed to continue active cooperation within the Minsk OSCE Group on this vital issue”, Kremlin said in a statement.

The White House press office reported:

“President Obama spoke by phone with Vladimir Putin to discuss President Putin’s June 20 meeting with Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia. President Obama expressed his readiness to intensify efforts together with Russia and with France to achieve a comprehensive settlement to the conflict.”

Sargsyan - Kerry meeting

On July 8, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan met with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry within NATO summit in Warsaw.

Armenian President and U.S. Secretary of State discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement.

“Serzh Sargsyan once again expressed his gratitude to Secretary Kerry for effective steps aimed at getting out of the tense situation in the conflict zone in April because of the aggression unleashed against Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijan. Thanks to these efforts, meetings in St. Petersburg and Vienna were held, during which joint statements were made”, the Armenian presidential press service reported.

Serzh Sargsyan and John Kerry also spoke about issues discussed on phone by presidents of Russia and United States on July 6.

“Azerbaijan attempts to back away again”

On July 9, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said that after St. Petersburg and Vienna meetings, “Azerbaijan attempts to back away from the reached agreements, pretending they had not been reached at all”.

He noted that during meetings with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and French President Francois Hollande in Warsaw, Armenian President discussed the agreements that had been reached in Vienna and reaffirmed in St. Petersburg.

“If implemented, they will create favorable conditions for advancing the peace process. We are talking about the creation of an investigation mechanism. Although Azerbaijan pretends it does not know about it, the co-chair countries have submitted detailed proposals. Armenia responded and gave a generally positive opinion regarding the establishment of this mechanism. This initiative was being discussed for years. Back in 2011 and 2012, Russian, Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents made public statements after summits in Sochi which indicated the necessity of establishment of this mechanism, but Azerbaijan was taking a step back each time. This time, too, after Vienna and St. Petersburg, Azerbaijan is trying to back away from that agreement, pretending that such an agreement has not been reached at all. Although the Co-Chair countries clearly said that the Presidents agreed to establish such a mechanism in their statements published following the Vienna summit”, Nalbandian said.
