In a press conference held by Senate Democrat Leadership today, Senate leadership shared that they are short on votes to pass Assisted Suicide in the Judicial Proceedings Committee.
When pressed for why they were not holding a vote, Committee Chair Will Smith stated that one or two members were not prepared to support the bill as a result of communications from constituents.
As a recap, on 2/8, the Senate JPR committee heard compelling expert witness testimony prepared by MDRTL and coalition allies in opposition to SB443 Assisted Suicide. Special thanks to Senator Mike McKay (R) District 1 who, having prepared with as assist from MDRTL, vigorously questioned bill proponents. He adeptly highlighted the elevated risk the bill would pose to vulnerable patients in hospice care across the state. Proponents were forced to defend the many flaws of this deadly legislation which puts vulnerable communities including the elderly, disabled, veterans and poor at risk of suicide.
A virtual joint hearing of the House version HB403 was held by the House HGO and Judiciary committees Friday 2/16. HB403 has also not been voted out of committee.
