Juniors Host Invitational, Take 2nd & 3rd
Our Junior Racing Team hosted teams from Hoover Sailing Club and Cowan Lake Sailing Association on Saturday. Though our 420 team was unable to attend, our four Laser sailors came excited to compete against the other clubs. A sense of rivalry fueled the anticipation. Hoover arrived with five lasers and two 420 teams and Cowan brought two 420 teams.
The first couple of races were short windward-leeward courses. Coach Siri Schantz provided pre-race tips and guidance specific to the race instructions, specifically covering offset mark rounding tactics.
Emerson led the team in Race 1, coming in third behind Emma and Porter, tough contenders from Hoover. Emerson was consistent over the series, finishing between third and fifth in all four races. John, also from LYC, finished close behind Emerson in Race 1 in fifth place.
Evelyn from Leatherlips had a tough first race, finishing eighth out of nine. After receiving advice from Coach Schantz and staying calm, she turned things around for herself and Leatherlips, finishing third, first and fourth in the three races that followed. Her first place race finish was the biggest win of the day, finishing nearly a full leg ahead of the rest of the fleet. LYC’s Emerson and Mason finished second and third in that same race for Leatherlips to take the top three spots.
The wind shifted frequently throughout the day, likely working to the home team’s advantage. When the final scores were tallied, Emma from Hoover took first, finishing with a score of 13. Emerson and Evelyn tied for second with an overall score of 16. The tie was broken by Evelyn’s first place finish.
A 420 team from Hoover (Brendan and Sam) took first followed by two 420 teams from Cowan in second (Molly and Lindsay) and third (Tessa and Lil).
While our team should be proud of Saturday’s results, it will continue to practice hard in preparation for the next and final regatta of the season on August 8th at Hoover.
