Tehran’s firefighting and safety services have confirmed that an elderly Afghan worker died after falling into a well.
The state news agency of Iran (IRNA) reported, citing Sayed Jalal Maleki, the spokesperson for Tehran’s Firefighting and Safety Services that the incident occurred on Tuesday, May 8th.
Reports indicate that this 70-year-old Afghan worker lost his life during the cleaning of a 28-meter-deep well when the rope he was tied to broke.
Maleki added that after hours of effort, rescue teams were able to retrieve the worker’s body from the well.
Previously, many Afghan workers have lost their lives in Iran due to engaging in strenuous and dangerous jobs.
According to statistics from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, around three million Afghan migrants live in Iran.
Unemployment and poverty are cited as the primary reasons millions of Afghan citizens migrate to Iran and neighbouring countries.
