Following Iran’s missile and drone attack on Israel in response to Israel’s strike on Iran’s political representation in Damascus, countries and international organizations have urged Israel to refrain from attacking Iran. Despite pressure and recommendations, Israel has stated it will respond to Iran’s attacks.
According to Reuters, a government source in Israel stated that Netanyahu held a cabinet meeting for the second time in less than 24 hours on Monday, 15th April, to discuss the response to Iran’s missile and drone attack.
Herzi Halevi, the chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces, without providing details, has said that Israel will respond to this attack.
The Israel Defense Forces official at the “Nevatim” military base in southern Israel stated, “The launch of this number of cruise missiles and drones into Israel will not go unanswered.”
Reports indicate that this Israeli military base was damaged due to the Iranian attack on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, Tehran has emphasized that it is not seeking further escalation after its extensive missile and drone attack on Israel.
This wave of reactions followed the Iranian attack.
The United Nations Security Council, following Iran’s attack, held an emergency session at the request of Israel, and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated during the Security Council meeting that the region and the world cannot afford to endure a full-scale destructive war.
He called for restraint by both Iran and Israel, saying that the people of the Middle East are facing the real danger of an all-out devastating war.
U.S. President Joe Biden also told Netanyahu on Sunday that the United States helped Israel repel Iran’s attack but will not participate in Israel’s retaliatory strike.
Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign affairs chief, said, “We are on the brink and must step back from it. We need to hit the brakes and reverse.”
French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron made similar requests.
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron called Iran’s missile and drone attacks on Saturday night a double defeat for Tehran and urged Israel to refrain from retaliating against Iran’s missile and drone attacks.
