South Korean media reported that North Korea has fired 200 artillery shells towards the island of “Yeongpyeong” in a provocative move. According to reports, there were no civilian casualties or military personnel injured in this North Korean action, as the shells landed in the northern part of the maritime border between the two countries.
South Korea has condemned this move, labelling it as a provocative act. The Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea stated that “it has caused no human or military harm but jeopardizes peace on the Korean Peninsula and escalates tensions.”
Emergency evacuation orders were issued at 12:02 local time at the request of the South Korean military.
South Korean authorities stated that they issued the evacuation order after receiving a call from a military unit, stating that they were conducting a naval operation on Yeongpyeong Island, which is near the border with North Korea. This action is in response to military provocations from Pyongyang.
It’s worth noting that North Korea had previously suspended its military agreement with South Korea regarding tension reduction. Yeongpyeong Island, which hosts a small civilian population of approximately 2,000 people and a military base, is situated within 3 kilometres of the disputed maritime border in the Yellow Sea and 12 kilometres from the North Korean coast.
It has been the scene of maritime clashes between the two Koreas over the years.
