IPL 2024: Indore Police Arrests Eight In Connection To Betting, Detailed Investigation Is Underway
The police have seized mobile phones, laptops, cheque books, bank passbooks and ATM cards from the suspects.
Indore: Just 16 matches into the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), Indore police busted an eight-member team involved in betting crores of rupees, an official said on Thursday. The arrested were picked up on Wednesday night from a multi-story building in the Lasudia area here in Madhya Pradesh when they were making people place bets online on the IPL matches through a website, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Rajesh Dandotia said.
The police have recovered mobile phones and fake SIM cards which were used to take betting amounts from people through QR codes, the official said. “During interrogation of the accused, it was found that their online betting network was spread across Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra,” Dandotia said.
The police seized 22 mobile phones, 17 cheque books, five laptops, 21 bank passbooks and 31 ATM cards along with registers containing account of crores of rupees of online betting from their possession, he said. A detailed investigation is underway into the case.
For the unknown, Indore isn’t hosting any of the IPL matches this season. A total of 11 venues have been named to host the entire IPL 2024. They are Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmadabad, Mohali, Bangalore, Guwahati, Lucknow and Dharamsala.
Earlier a couple of days ago, Raipur police have nabbed down four people for operating an illegal betting racket. The arrested used ‘Shubh-Labh 0543’ app for the wrongdoing. Police have recovered a laptop, seven mobile phones, Rs 60,000 in cash, betting slips, and a car valued at approximately Rs 7 lakh.
The four arrested have been identified as Ajay Dewangan (31), Deepak Khandpur (38), Khileshwar Dewangan (35), and Rakesh Singh Rajput (37). A case under under Gambling Act and Gambling (Prohibition) Act, 2022 has been registered.
