After delivering a couple of unconventional box office hits like Vicky Donor, Piku and Pink, Shoojit Sircar is gearing up to rollout the schedule for a new film starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, after he wraps up work on the Vicky Kaushal starrer-Shaheed Udham Singh, a biopic on the legendary Sikh freedom fighter, Udham Singh.

While both Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana have worked with Sircar before – Khurrana in his debut film, Vicky Donor and Bachchan in Piku and Pink – this is the first time that they’ll be seen together in the same frame. An excited Ayushmann Khuranna took to Instagram today to share the news with his fans and also revealed that the film will hit the theatres, this year itself, in November.

The film, titled Gulabo Sitabo, is being helmed as a quirky family comedy and will be set in Lucknow. The film is written by Juhi Chaturvedi, who’s also collaborated with Sircar for October, Vicky Donor and Piku. It will be produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar. The film is expected to commence shooting in June.

Sircar and Chaturvedi were working on the script for quite some time now, and Sircar reportedly shared the script of Gulabo Sitabo with both the protagonists at the same time. “Juhi and I have been working on this script for a while now. We all know whenever she comes up with a story, it has her trademark quirk. As soon as I read it, I shared it with Mr Bachchan and Ayushmann at the same time. I thought it would take some time to develop and take it forward, but everyone was so enthusiastic to work on this script, they figured out their dates and here we are, planning to release the film this year itself,” said Sircar to Mumbai Mirror confirming the cast and the release dates of the film.

The daily also elaborated on the title of the film, by explaining that traditionally, Gulabo and Sitabo are glove puppet characters from the North Indian state, made of papier-mâché and dressed in colourful clothes and trinkets. In the story, which borrows its title from their names, Sitabo is the worn-out, overworked wife of a man, while Gulabo is his enticing mistress. It is peppered with local humour and songs that depict the nuances of daily life.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh also confirmed the news today via Twitter and shared a happy picture of Bachchan along with Sircar.
