Since the beginning of this year, we’ve been hearing a lot of new names sprouting in Bollywood. The list of these new names includes the likes of star kids such as Ananya Panday, Sara Ali Khan, Nupur Sanon and Ahan Shetty alongside the names of lesser mortals like Tara Sutaria and Rakul Preet Singh. While Sutaria’s performance in SOTY 2 has received mixed reviews, we are very excited to see what Rakul Preet Singh will bring to the screen.

Who is Rakul Preet Singh and everything you need to know about her

If you’re wondering why Rakul Preet Singh’s face looks so familiar it’s because unlike Sutaria, this is not her first Bollywood flick. Singh made her Bollywood debut in 2014 with Divya Khosla Kumar’s Yaariyan. The film didn’t do well at the box office, and then we didn’t see Singh in a Hindi film again, until 2018. No, she wasn’t MIA – she was just busy signing big ticket Telugu films like Kick 2 (2015), Sarrainodu (2016), Nannaku Prematho (2016), Dhruva (2016), Spyder (2017) and Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru (2017).

In a recent interview, Rakul Preet Singh revealed that she decided to take a conscious break from Hindi cinema after Yaariyan as her name and talent were picking up momentum in the South and she wanted to explore her opportunities there. She returned to Hindi cinema in 2018 with Aiyaary, which starred Sidharth Malhotra in the lead role. This film also, unfortunately, tanked at the box office.

But this time around, Rakul didn’t opt for a hiatus. Instead, she ended up signing another Hindi film – De De Pyaar De with Ajay Devgn and Tabu.

Slated to release on May 17, De De Pyaar De is a romcom written by Luv Ranjan and directed by Akiv Ali. It is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg under their respective banners: T-Series and Luv Films. The film follows a middle-aged divorcé’s (Ajay Devgn) journey, who falls in love with a woman almost half his age (Rakul Preet Singh). The already complicated situation intensifies when his wife (Tabu) stumbles in the picture.

While the trailer reveals an interesting plot between the three protagonists, all eyes are set on Rakul Preet Singh for her wit and on-screen allure. But before you see the film, here are some interesting facts about Rakul Preet Singh that you probably didn’t know:

Rakul Preet Singh was born October 10, 1990.

Before venturing into the world of films, Singh was a successful model. She began modelling while she was still in college.

Her modelling gigs actually led her to the sets of her first debut film Gilli – a Kannada flick – in 2009.

Even after her acting debut, she continued modelling. In 2011, she participated in the Femina Miss India pageant, and won five pageant titles: People’s Choice Miss Indiatimes, Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face, Femina Miss Talented, Femina Miss Beautiful Smile and Femina Miss Beautiful Eyes.

After her sweeping victories in the pageant circuit, Singh decided to focus her energy on films, and went on to work in Keratam to make her debut in the Telugu film circuit and Thadaiyara Thaakka to mark her entry into Tamil cinema.

While she has worked with some of biggest of the actors in the South, like Mahesh Babu, Jr NTR, Ram Charan and Allu Arjun, Rakul believes she’s not carved a name for herself in Bollywood after 2 films. She’s also not yet fully come to terms with the fact that her full-time job is that of an actor. “I don’t think I have yet made a name for myself in Bollywood. I don’t think I have done anything. In fact, I always keep saying that the fact that ‘I am an actor’ has not sunk in my head. I have been in this industry, in films for five to six years now. Having done so many films even in the south, I mean I take my job seriously, but I don’t take the fact that I am an actor seriously,” Rakul told IANS.

Multilingual Rakul is not biased to any particular language, and says that her aim is to be part of good films irrespective of their language.

She’s also a self-proclaimed workaholic, who can work up to 30 hours straight.

In an interview with IANS, Rakul Preet Singh revealed that she chose to work in De De Pyaar De because she liked the script and also because for an outsider, she thought this film would be a great opportunity. “I said ‘yes’ to the film because of my role. Let’s face the fact, it is very difficult for an outsider to kind of crack the film which has a great role for the girl and when you are an integral part of the story.”

Rakul’s a big believer in working hard and has never shied away from admitting her struggles or failures in the past. “There is always a struggle, nothing comes easy. Sitting and cribbing that this person got it easy does not work; each and every person has to struggle. There is beauty in those struggles as you are working towards something that you want to get. You know the shelf life is lesser (for heroines) so you want to push yourself more as you want to do better work.  I am not running for money, money is something that follows,” she said in an interview.

Like most Bollywood aspirants, Rakul also wants to nab a Dharma production and hopes that her hard work will eventually lead her to a great Dharma script.

Rakul is a fitness enthusiast and for her role in De De Pyaar De, she lost 8 kg to get in the right shape for her character.

She also attended bartending classes for her role in the film and described it as a great experience. “I would also cut my finger once in a while during the process. I wanted to be comfortable with the body language so that it doesn’t look awkward while enacting it,” Rakul said to Mid Day.
