The Jaguars' interest in signing Tim Tebow makes absolutely zero sense

What in the world is Urban Meyer thinking?

So it looks like Tim Tebow is going to get another shot in the NFL as it was reported on Monday that he and the Jaguars will soon be agreeing on a one-year deal that will give the former QB a shot at making the team… as a tight end.

I think what Tim Tebow did back in the day with the Denver Broncos was pretty cool. I think what he did chasing his baseball dream with the Mets was pretty gutsy and awesome. He’s athletic career has been very impressive.

But there is no bone in my body that understands why in the world the Jaguars would want to bring Tebow back to the NFL, especially as a tight end.

This whole thing makes absolutely zero sense and if I’m a member of the Jaguars I’m sitting around my house today wondering what in the world my franchise is thinking by even considering this move.

Let’s look at the reasons why this doesn’t make sense:

1. Tebow has never played tight end in the NFL.

2. Tebow hasn’t played in a NFL game since 2012, when he was barely a QB for the New York Jets. 2012!

3. He’ll be 34 years old when the season stars.

4. He had one receiving target in his NFL career and it didn’t go well at all.

5. HE’S NEVER PLAYED TIGHT END IN THE NFL!

I get that Tebow has a lot of heart and a lot of grit. Good for him. But those two things shouldn’t be the determining factors in bringing in an old dude who hasn’t played in the league in nine years. You can find guys with heart and grit who also have TALENT and have played the position for years and can be productive for you. It’s really not that hard to do that.

What’s hard is pointing at Tebow and going “That’s our guy!”

I mean, what in the gosh darn world is Urban Meyer even thinking?

Now, I know what you’re gonna say – Tebow will sell a lot of jerseys and tickets to Jags games.

My question to that is – will he?

Chances are he’s not going to make the roster but even if he does, are that many people buying Tebow jerseys to make the team enough extra side cash to see this move as a success? And if he makes the team are people really buying more tickets to watch some likely below-average tight end maybe take a few snaps?

I can’t buy that at all.

Jags fans are going to be buying lots of tickets for one very big reason – Trevor Lawrence.

So I don’t see this as being a big money grab for the Jags. I just can’t buy into the idea that they’d make a lot of cash off the former Florida Gator. Do people love him in Florida? 100 percent. Are people going to spend a bunch of money on a jersey of a player who hasn’t played football in so many years and is trying to make a comeback at a position he’s never played? I gotta think the answer to that is no.

This is all an embarrassing look for Meyer as he begins his first stint as a NFL coach. This league isn’t college football. He’s not coaching a bunch of kids. He’s coaching men who play football as their job. He owes it to those men to take things seriously and not make moves that make the rest of the football world scratch their heads and likely point and laugh at them.

Tebow, by all accounts, is a great human being who has done a lot of special things in his life. That’s all great.

Bringing him onto your football team, though, isn’t great. It’s mind boggling.
