Let's all root for total chaos in the first round of the NFL Draft

Happy NFL draft day, everyone.

Since the Bucs beat the Chiefs back in February we’ve all been looking forward to this day, which is always a fun one for football fans as we wait to see if our team adds a star that can change the direction of our franchise or if our team can just fill that big hole that desperately needs to be filled.

It’s three days full of optimism where things like drafting an offensive lineman you’ve never watched play can make you feel more secure about your team’s chances of improving. Anything is possible. It’s wonderful.

Tonight should a fun one, too, because there’s going to be a huge feeling of normality to it as tens of thousands of fans will be in attendance in downtown Cleveland, which is something we haven’t experienced since the start of the pandemic. Also, Roger Goodell will be back to hugging players after they get drafted, which is always entertaining.

While those feelings of normality will be nice, I’m rooting for something else to happen alongside that – chaos. I want wild picks near the top, big trades, head-scratching moments from teams that hit the panic button. I want all of it! My pal Henry McKenna did a mock draft recently that is all about chaos, with the Saints trading up for a QB and the Bengals getting aggressive for a WR. Count me in for stuff like that.

Will that happen? Probably not but we can all still root for it.

We know chaos probably won’t happen with the first two picks. Trevor Lawrence, whose brother is a really talented artist and has used the QB as his model, has been locked in for the No. 1 pick since his freshman year at Clemson. He’s going to the Jaguars to team up with Urban Meyer in what should be an interesting journey.

BYU QB Zach Wilson is then going to the New York Jets with the No. 2 pick.

But after that things could get interesting. The 49ers have the third pick and while everything points to the them taking a QB, wouldn’t it be awesome if they just shocked the world and picked Florida tight end Kyle Pitts to team up with George Kittle? That would definitely throw the draft for a loop. But yeah, they’re likely going to take Alabama QB Mac Jones, which is wild in its own right because they should be taking Justin Fields.

The Falcons own the No. 4 pick and face a franchise-defining moment in which they could go a bunch of different ways with that pick.

I would love to see Bill Belichick, whose dog is ready for the draft, do something he doesn’t normally do and trade up so he could land Justin Field if the 49ers don’t take him.

I can’t wait to see where the sons of three former NFL players, including Joe Horn, land.

I can’t wait to see where Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith and his 165 pounds gets selected. Here’s why teams should be worried about his weight, by the way.

I can’t wait to see Eagles fans flip out over who GM Howie Roseman selects.

I can’t wait to see some more incredible fashion choices by players whose lives are about to change.

But most of all, I just want chaos tonight. Lots of trades, lots of big moves, lots of fun.

– MLB fans rightly roasted umpire Marty Foster after he made a mind-boggling bad call in last night’s Marlins-Brewers game.

– Conor McGregor did the most petty thing ever in buying a pub in Dublin.

– Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo had to pitch in Wednesday night’s Cubs-Braves game and he actually struck out Freddie Freeman, who had a great response to it.

– Kevin Love apologized for giving up on his team the other night.

– My pal Charles Curtis ranked every Kentucky Derby horse in this year’s race by its name. You’re gonna enjoy the Seinfeld reference in one of them.
