Ajax will relish the thought of a likely meeting opposite Barcelona in this year’s finale showdown, with the Blaugrana beating Liverpool 3-0 at the Camp Nou in their first leg. It was Cruyff—a legend of Ajax and Barca—who helped bring prosperity to both clubs and could act as a unifier between the two again in 2019.

Tottenham’s title prospects are nowhere near as strong entering the final stages of their season. The cruelty of these last few weeks is almost poetic in that, after thriving for so long despite making zero signings last summer, Mauricio Pochettino’s lack of depth has come back to haunt him.

Harry Kane is battling to return from injury for the trip to Amsterdam, and his absence hasn’t helped the squad as they’ve gone on a run of five defeats in their past six matches. Heung-min Son, who was sent off in Saturday’s 1-0 disappointment at Bournemouth, will be available to return after he was suspended for the first leg in what could be his last game of the season.

Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong will look to lead this capable crew of Ajax stars into the history books. Meanwhile, Spurs have a batch of Amsterdam alumni in the likes of Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez, all of whom will be eager to underline who deserves their spot at the continental peak.

Spurs have failed to score in each of their last two away games and need to bag at least one on Wednesday if they’re to advance their European dream. Ajax, meanwhile, have lost to only one team at the Johan Cruyff Arena this season—Real Madrid.
