Which franchise is poised to make a mistake on Thursday in the NFL Draft?

The first round of the 2019 NFL Draft will get underway Thursday night in Nashville, and it’s a guarantee that not every team’s fanbase will be thrilled with their organization by the end of the night. Whether it’s reaching for a risky prospect, ignoring team needs or taking the wrong quarterback, at least one organization is going to mess up in the first round. We asked the FTW staff to predict which fanbase will be most upset during the NFL Draft’s first round. Here are the picks:

Steven Ruiz: Raiders

It has to be the Raiders, right? After the team traded away Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper for all of these picks, expectations are high. And now we’re getting talk about a surprise pick after Jon Gruden sent all of his scouts home to prevent leaks. Something crazy is going to end up happening; and, by crazy, I mean he’s totally going to draft Daniel Jones. It’s not like there haven’t been clues…

Chris Korman: Redskins

You can just see this fiasco unfolding in slow motion: There are rumors that the Redskins are intent on moving up to grab a QB, which makes some sense given that they’ve got Case Keenum atop the depth chart while Alex Smith rehabs from a devastating leg injury. But those rumors also include the idea that Dan Snyder, the team’s bumbling bag of ego for an owner, has taken over the process.

Which is how we arrive here, with the Redskins giving up a bunch of future draft capital to move up and draft … the guy who is NOT the one potential game-changing franchise QB in this draft. That’s not a slight against Haskins, who is a nice player who figures to do a solid job. But if you’re really looking to invigorate your fanbase and you’re willing to give up what it takes to move up 12 spots in the draft you’re much better off just going all the way and getting THE guy. But Snyder will find a way to take just enough wrong turns here that he won’t get back on the right path. That’s how he’s run the franchise for two decades.

Charles Curtis: Giants

You can feel it from Giants fans everywhere: They’re preparing for the franchise to completely blow their first-round picks. That’s mostly thanks to GM Dave Gettleman singing the praises of a clearly-cooked Eli Manning. So New York can either take a QB not named Dwayne Haskins, trade up some of their many picks to guarantee they pick a quarterback or not take Manning’s successor at all in the first round at all. The tabloids will rip them to shreds and fans will riot. Welp.

Andrew Joseph: Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals have the No. 1 pick, and they managed to put themselves in a self-inflicted, lose-lose situation. If the Cardinals draft Kyler Murray with the No. 1 pick, they’re admitting that they wasted a top-10 pick on Josh Rosen (that they traded up for). If they go with Nick Bosa or Quinnen Williams, they just spent the past few months alienating the presumed face of the franchise. Any pick that isn’t Kyler Murray will be met with boos, but no matter what happens Thursday, Cardinals fans will be fed up with general manager Steve Keim.

Evan Thorpe: Redskins

The Washington Redskins will trade up to get… Quinnen Williams because they are enamored with Alabama football players. They’ve drafted Alabama players with their first round pick in back to back years so they might as well make it a trifecta. They already have 8 Alabama players so why not call them the Washington Crimson Tide or the Alabama Redskins. No need for a QB when you have an NCAA National Championship team.

Nick Schwartz: Giants

The Giants might be in a no-win situation, especially if the rumors that the Redskins plan to move up for a quarterback are true. The Giants will be left to either take a QB that isn’t a home run prospect to become the future of the franchise – such as Daniel Jones or Drew Lock – at No. 6 or No. 17, or pass on a QB and settle for another down year with Eli Manning. If you don’t end up with Kyler Murray, you have to feel at least a little apprehensive about every other QB on the board.

Michelle Martinelli: Lions

The Lions will end up drafting a player they don’t really need in the first round – like a defensive lineman or a quarterback – over a logical choice that addresses a more pressing need, like a defensive back or wide receiver or a tight end or any player their $135 million quarterback could throw to. Fans will certainly hate it, but they’ll be more frustrated than angry because deep down, they know they’ll be loyal to their team even when it doesn’t finish above .500 again.
