No team in the NCAA tournament is more thankful for the automatic bid process than NC Central. The Eagles had a forgettable regular season, going just 15-15. However, they were a surprise winner of the MEAC tournament as a No. 3 seed. This is just their third appearance in the big dance, each of the previous two times they’ve been knocked out in the first round.
Senior center Raasean Davis leads the way for Central, averaging 14.6 PPG and 8.9 RPG, both team-highs. Davis snagged 14 boards in the team’s 50-47 win over Norfolk St. in the conference final. Some might say that this team is already a Cinderella story with how they’ve made it this far after such a mediocre season. Can their carriage ride last a few more weeks?
#16 North Dakota State
North Dakota State didn’t have the best of seasons, but that doesn’t matter when your conference tournament gives the winner an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. With a mediocre 15-15 record entering the Summit League tournament, there wasn’t much ink spilled over the No. 4 seed. Three wins later, including a decisive one over No. 2 seed Omaha, and the Bison earned themselves a conference title and a ticket to the dance.
ND State is led by a guard duo of Tyson Ward and Vinnie Shahid, who both average around 12 points a game. This is just the fourth trip to the NCAA tournament for this school. In 2014, they knocked off No. 5 seed Oklahoma. That was the only time they’ve ever advanced past the first round.
