A CT woman found a tracking device on her car. Police found the man who allegedly put it there.
State police also issued this warning after an Apple AirTag tracking device was found: "If you receive a notification that a tracking device is nearby and believe that you may be in danger, please contact police as soon as it is safe to do so."
A man who has lived in various towns across the state was charged with electronic stalking following a lengthy Connecticut State Police investigation that began when a woman found an Apple AirTag attached on her car.
State police said the investigation began in March 2023 when the woman contacted Troop B in North Canaan to report that she had found the Apple AirTag on her vehicle.
The Goshen resident told troopers that the Apple AirTag tracking device was found on the interior of the front driver’s side wheel rim of her car. The woman started the search for the device after she received a phone alert informing her that an AirTag device “was moving with her, during the month of February 2023.” The woman initially had believed the notification was a result of a relative leaving Apple AirPods earbuds in her car, state police said.
But the women then again received a phone notification in March 2023 that an Apple AirTag was moving with her, state police said. She searched her car with the help of a relative, and the AirTag device was found “attached to the inside of her vehicle’s driver’s side front wheel rim with an adhesive substance,” state police said
The women then put the AirTag in a plastic bag, and returned to her home, prior to contacting Troop B, state police said. “The complainant further explained to the investigating Trooper that these events had caused her to fear for her personal safety and that of her family members.”
State police said the investigating trooper obtained a search and seizure warrant for subscriber information associated with the serial number on the AirTag the woman found. The trooper received the subscriber information, which showed the serial number was associated with an Anthony Magro, who had a last known address in Torrington, state police said.
State police said the woman reported that “she was not familiar with and had no known interactions with Anthony Magro.”
Then, unsuccessful attempts were made in May 2023 to contact Magro at his last known address in Torrington and at a home in Bridgeport that he claimed to living at, as well as by phone, state police said. Investigators also developed information in August 2023 that Magro had begun using a new phone number and again tried to contact him, state police said.
The investigating trooper then obtained a warrant for the arrest of Anthony Magro, 25, of Bridgeport, and he was found in West Haven this week, state police said.
After Magro was taken into custody, he was brought to Troop B in North Canaan where the warrant was served, charging him with electronic stalking. state police said. Magro is free on a $10,000 cash/surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment at Superior Court in Torrington Feb. 16.
State police also issued this warning: “If you receive a notification that a tracking device is nearby and believe that you may be in danger, please contact police as soon as it is safe to do so.”
