An East Hartford woman was killed in an early morning two-car crash on Interstate 84 in Manchester on Thursday, state police said.
At 6:53 a.m. on Thursday, a Hyundai Genesis was driving in the center of three travel lanes on I-84 West in Manchester, east of the Exit 61 on-ramp, as a Nissan Juke was traveling in the HOV lane before the Exit 61 on-ramp, according to the Connecticut State Police.
For an unknown reason, the Nissan veered across the swale and into the center travel lane, colliding with the Hyundai, state police said. The Hyundai veered into the grassy area to the right of the travel lanes and came to an uncontrolled stop. The Nissan also veered into the grassy area, went through a wooded area, reentered the right shoulder, crossed all lanes of travel including the HOV lane, collided with the center median concrete barrier and came to a stop in the left shoulder of I-84 West, according to state police.
The Hyundai driver, a 62-year-old man from South Windsor, told troopers he was not injured and declined medical attention at the scene, state police said.
The Nissan driver, a 26-year-old man from Hartford, suffered suspected minor injuries and was transported to Saint Francis Hospital, according to state police. The front right passenger of the Nissan, identified as 25-year-old Mireilly Vega of East Hartford, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Hartford Hospital where she was pronounced dead, state police said.
The crash remains under investigation. Any witness or person with a vehicle equipped with a dashboard camera who was driving through the area at the time of the collision is asked to contact Trooper Michael Dean at Troop H at 860-534-1098 or by email at michael.dean@ct.gov.
