Free Democrats Party submits a draft statement on suspension of Armenia's EEU membership for consideration of Armenian Parliament
Chairman of the Free Democrats Party, Armenian lawmaker Khachatur Kokobelyan has submitted a draft statement "On the launch of procedure of suspension of Armenia's membership in the Eurasia Economic Union" for consideration of the Armenian National Assembly.
Kokobelyan says that the measures envisaged by the provisions of the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union dated 29 March 2014 were not implemented. Neither has any progress been registered towards development of the friendly relations. On the contrary, according to the National Statistical Service, in 2015 export dropped by 4.7%, with the export to Russia falling by 28.1%.
"Armenia's EEU membership has not only failed to ensure economic development, but also caused economic blockade, reducing the direct foreign investments. In addition, the EEU membership has not provided Armenia with security, depriving Armenia of the opportunity to have a political and economic alternative, as well as an alternative security system," the document says.
The MP stresses that in the course of Azerbaijan's aggression against Karabakh a decision was taken to move the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council from Yerevan to Moscow. "The EEU member states took that step in favor of the interests of Azerbaijan, which is no member of the EEU," he says. "That being said, I suggest that the President and the Government of Armenia should launch the procedure of suspension of Armenia's EEU membership," the draft statement says.
