Negative net migration rate in Armenia drops to 9,857 people
In the first 9 months of 2019 the negative net migration rate in Armenia dropped to 9,857 people from 15,555 people in the same period of 2018, Deputy Head of the Migration Service Irina Davtyan said at a press conference on Wednesday.
According to her, in 2017 some 35.1% of Armenian households were involved in migration processes. In 2018 their share fell to 26.1%.
'The drop is especially noticeable in Yerevan, where the proportion of households dependent on migrants working abroad fell from 24. 4% to 13.6%," she said.
According to Davtyan, the drop in urban communities amounted to 2.8 percentage points - from 28% to 26.8%, while in rural communities the share of households involved in migration processes decreased from 41.6% to 37.7%.
She said that 85% of migration processes are seasonal with a noticeable drop in the number of people wishing to go abroad for permanent residence.
She said also the bulk of Armenian migrants seek asylum in France, Germany and the Czech Republic. According to the National Statistical Committee, the number of resident population as of October 1, 2019 stood at 2,957,500 people.
The number of the urban population stood at 1,893,200 people (a decline of 1,700 thousand over 9 months). The capital Yerevan had 1,083,600 population. In rural areas, the population stood at 1,073, 800 people, which was 6,100 less than at the beginning of the year. --0--
