Mom wants justice for son shot in back
An irrate mother says she will not rest until justice is served after her 11-year-old son was shot in the back during a drive-by shooting in Wentworth.
|||Durban - A Wentworth mother will not rest until justice has been served on the men who shot and wounded her son on Sunday.
There were three drive-by shootings in the space of an hour on Woodville Road, Austerville in the South Durban suburb. Carmel Du Plessis, 28, said her son Lyndon, 11, was walking to the tuck shop across the road from her block of flats in Tuin Road when a red Golf stopped on Woodville Road and the occupants inside began shooting indiscriminately towards the buildings.
“Lyndon tried to run into the flats to hide from the bullets in a stairway. He was unlucky to have been hit by a bullet on the right side of his back.
“A few elderly women who were standing at the side of the block of flats also hid when the shots were fired,” Du Plessis said.
One of the women saw Lyndon faint on the staircase and then saw blood stains on his shirt.
The women screamed out for Du Plessis who then took the young boy to Wentworth hospital in a neighbour’s car. The bullet was removed and he was later discharged.
“He is in a lot of pain but putting on a brave face. He has not slept well in three days. I am lucky his injuries were not severe and the wound was stitched.
“The police have all the evidence and we would like to see what they will do with it. I would like to take this case up to higher authority,” she said.
Lyndon said he loved swimming and often goes to the swimming pool nearby.
Bullets also struck the wall of the building and one of them went through the window pane of a 2nd floor flat and hit the lounge wall.
Residents handed over six bullet cartridges to police when they arrived.
“We do not like to live like this. There were so many innocent children who were playing outside,” Du Plessis said.
While police could not confirm this, residents alleged that there were two other drive- by shootings in the area on Sunday.
It is alleged the fight started in an adjacent road, Major Culvert, where there was a party.
A black VW Polo and then later a white Ford Bantam bakkie drove past Tuin Road and the occupants of the vehicles began shooting at people standing near a block of flats.
Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said police records stated that at 6pm on Sunday, three people aged between 11 and 32 were shot and injured at Woodville Road.
“It is alleged that a vehicle with four occupants fired shots at people who were at the residential place in Woodville and sped off. Victims were taken to hospital. Motive for the attack is unknown. Cases of attempted murder. No arrests have been made at this stage,” Zwane said.
