MC Exclusive: Joey King
Meet Joey King. She is one of Hollywood’s finest young rising actors who are advocating to make our world better, one dynamic role at a time. Fearless, authentic, and undeniably talented, the Kissing Booth star brings a quiet confidence onto the big screen, having played many different characters that she can relate to and identify with. The outspoken and self-conscious young star opens up to us about who the real Joey is—she makes an amazing pecan pie—, her desire to live in the moment everyday, the on-going climate crisis, and the importance of having a solid support system
Tell us who the real Joey King is. “She is self-conscious and confident. She’s a sister, a daughter, a granddaughter, and a cousin. She’s a good friend. She makes an amazing pecan pie (thanks to Martha Stewart) and tries to live in the moment every day. She’s nowhere near perfect, but she’s me and I’m really grateful for that.”
When did the dream of being on the big screen begin? “I don’t think there was ever a particular moment that it hit me that I wanted to be on the big screen. I started acting when I was four by doing commercials, and that progressed to TV guest spots. Then as I got older and continued being granted the privilege to be on set it was just this feeling in me, of knowing with absolute certainty, that I never wanted to do anything else..”
This issue is all about embracing a solid support system, and how important it is to have a good support system around you. “There’s nothing greater in this world than being surrounded by people who have your best interest at heart. Finding people who love you unconditionally and push you to be your best is crucial. Whether it’s a chosen family, blood relatives, a teacher, a community, or even a boss, support can come from anywhere. You just have to be willing to be vulnerable and find it.”
My constant mentor throughout my career is…“My mom. She’s always had my back. She carries so much confidence and fearlessness and I’ve learned so much from that. If she doesn’t know how to do something, it doesn’t intimidate her, it fuels her determination to learn it. I admire that so much.”
Some individuals rely on their makeup to get them through the day, and some need their support pets around, while others have a particular bag/item that helps them feel empowered or a certain way. We call these items ‘sidekicks’ as they play a role in supporting you. Are there any particular ‘sidekick’ that you feel helps you in any way or form? “My little dog, Angel is my forever sidekick. She’s a 13-year-old teacup yorkie and I can’t imagine life without her.”
Tell us what your personal take is on the idea of bringing gender parity not just to entertainment, but to every walk of life. “Women are so amazing, and so are men. Being able to celebrate the accomplishments of other human beings EQUALLY is a gift that I think our world hasn’t quite grasped yet. I love how far everyone has come, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. Within the entertainment industry, yes of course it’s great to see more females being represented, but the people who the issue of equality affects the most, are those in the general workplace. I want THEIR stories and voices to be heard. The women AND men who work in schools, factories, sales, etc. There’s no longer room for misogyny or prejudice opinions. I hope more people start to truly listen instead of just listening to respond.”
