The greatest ride on Earth – and in a galaxy far, far away

Two of the world’s most iconic design teams from Porsche and Lucasfilm have come together in a thrilling new collab for the all-new Star Wars film

It’s (nearly) the moment we’ve been waiting for. The film event of the year is almost here. You’d have to be living in a cave on planet Ahch-To not to know that the 19 December sees the launch of the last instalment of the SkyWalker Saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

And with it, one of the more curious (we say exciting) colabs of recent times – to celebrate the launch of the final skywalker installment in a galaxy far, far away, an all-new ship especially designed by Lucasfilm and Porsche is going to be unveiled on the red carpet at the US world premiere of the film on the 16 December in LA.

That’s right – one of the biggest mysteries in the final film of the franchise isn’t how – or why – they created the double lightsabre Daisy Ridley’s character Rey gets to wield, but how those behemoths of road and screen came together in the first place.

The answer is that this isn’t just some clever marketing tie-up – these two brands actually have a lot more in common than you might think. After all, it takes a very, very special creative team to design some of the world’s leading vehicles (wherever that world may be) – no wonder Porsche and Lucasfilm’s design teams jumped at the chance to get intergalactic together.

The challenge, according to Doug Chiang, Vice President and Executive Creative Director at Lucasfilm, was ‘to design a starship that would be both true to the Star Wars universe and Porsche design DNA.’

Which turned out not to be as big an ask as you might first think. As Micheal Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche points out, ‘both worlds have a similar design philosophy.’

That ‘philosophy’ would, presumably, encompass sleek design excellence and a certain, ahem, reputation for speed. The much-anticipated new release from Porsche is, after all, the Taycan* – the brand’s first fully electric car which can accelerate faster than the force of gravity. The Porsche Taycan will also showcase at the US world premiere of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, on the 16 December in LA.

 

The combined result is, fittingly, pretty epic – and may yet come to a screen near you (we’re betting our Imperial credits on this not being the last visit to a Stars Wars-related universe).

Till then, buckle up – it’s going to be a one helluva ride!
