Vienna (dpa) - This weekend‘s loss in the Austrian presidential election will not deter Austria‘s far-right Freedom Party (FPOe) from its plan to win the next parliamentary elections and become part of the government, party leaders said Tuesday.The plan they laid out - which assumes there will be early elections in 2017 - calls for the FPOe to take a third of the seats in parliament, boosting its seat share from 36 to 61."No one should think that we will just sit in a corner and lick our wounds," FPOe chief Heinz-Christian Strache said at a press conference in Vienna.A one-third share of the seats would give the FPOe the power to block any constitutional amendments. This would increase its chances of forming a coalition cabinet with one of the centrist parties, Strache said.The opposition FPOe is well-placed to win the next elections.It has topped the polls for more than a year and currently enjoys approval ratings of 35 per cent, ahead of the Social Democrats and the centre-right People‘s Party, which form the current coalition.Sunday‘s loss was not really a defeat, Strache said, pointing to Hofer‘s strong result. "It showed us what‘s possible," he said.FPOe presidential candidate Norbert Hofer lost Sunday‘s vote with 46.2 per cent, trailing behind his Green rival Alexander Van der Bellen with 53.8 per cent, according to the final ballot count that the Interior Ministry published on Tuesday.Unionists and regional politicians within the Social Democratic Party, as well as the right-leaning wing of the People‘s Party have each been mulling cooperation with the FPOe.The two coalition parties have governed Austria for most of the past seven decades. Their popularity has fallen as their constant bickering during the past few years has overshadowed their efforts to revive the lacklustre economy.
