It is intriguing to know that age old traditions are being practiced in this century. The older generations do not want their efforts in preserving culture and tradition to get wasted. 

As bizarre as some of the things they do while preserving a certain way of life are, they do them for justified purposes. The issue of virginity has been a major concern in the last few decades.

The immorality rate is definitely a cause for alarm as young girls are not bothered about the things they do with their bodies.

The society in a way promotes waywardness in girls since individuals have become indifferent and insensitive to a girl keeping herself before marriage.

Most girls in this generation get defiled before the age of 15. If they do not get abused by pedophiles when they are younger, they end up losing their virginity to men who are undeserving.

Without putting the entire blame on the men, we also have to acknowledge the fact that some girls get swayed by material things while a few allow curiosity to get the best of them. They want to know what sex entails at an age when they should be busy focusing on their lives and gaining direction.

In order to reduce the rate of promiscuity in girls, a virgin girl ceremony was organized and held in Ogu town, Rivers state. This ceremony is known as Iria; it is a Wakirike tradition that requires teenage daughters to get certified as virgins before they are given out in marriage.

This tradition has been in existence for a long time. The elders ensure the girls are presented in ways that do not violate the demands of the tradition. Their clothes, hair style and skin appearance are thoroughly screened by the elders before the ceremony.

Parents are expected to make their teenage daughters participate in this ceremony before she can be married off to a man. The girls who are certified to be real virgins will be given gifts and blessed by the chiefs during the ceremony.

The girls who do well and are certified as true virgins are presented with the certificate of virginity which is signed under the authority of the Amanyanabo-in-Council of Ogu.

As absurd as this event is, it may encourage girls who wish to be celebrated for their chastity. Will you like this kind of event to be held in your community?
