A (Not So) Scientific Look at How Sully has used his Goalies
This was talked about in one of the daily threads, about how it was odd that Fleury was getting his 3rd start in a row with Murray healthy and whether this was a change in the way Sullivan is using his goalies, or if maybe Murray was hurt.
My interpretation was that it was a change in the way Sullivan had been using Flower and Murray, that it seemed like for the most part he was just switching Murray and Fleury back and forth using them as a tandem... but that doesn't appear to be the case.
It does appear that Sullivan is possibly trying to stick with the hot hand until the hot hand fails... the only problem is, neither Fleury or Murray have been able to string together a bunch of good games in a row.
See the statistics below... here is where the not so scientific part comes in. I'm just basing this more on SV% and GA as to whether the goalie had a good game or not. I know there are other factors at play here, but for the sake of ease, I'll just go with this.
I left out the games before October 29th, because most of those Fleury was backed up by Condon, and nobody really expected Condon to get any starts over Fleury, especially this early in the season while Fleury was fresh.
Based on this, before tonight's game(using the sample of games I have provided), no goalie has started more than 2 games in a row... and it doesn't appear to be because Sullivan doesn't want one to start more than a few in a row. They just haven't earned it. Almost every time either Murray or Fleury started a game and had a good outing... the next game was either a back to back, allowing the other goalie to start the 3rd game... or the goalie had a bad game so Sullivan switched to the other.
Take it for what you will. Either way, we need more consistent goaltending from both Murray and Fleury.
