The Hidden Connection Between Climate Change and Child Marriage

Bangladesh is experiencing a climate crisis—the coastal country has been subject to increasingly extreme weather, like floods, droughts, and cyclones. Almost 30 percent of girls in Bangladesh are married before they turn 15. As sea levels rise and extreme weather destroys resources, families feel greater pressure to push their young daughters into marriage. This documentary by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and TakePart explores the stories of two girls named Brishti and Razia, and makes the case that child marriage is one of the direct consequences of destroyed livelihoods due to climate change.
