If you won’t fight militants then leave Boko Haram alone – Northern Prof spits fire

– Prof Ango Abdullahi described Niger Delta militants as economic terrorists

– The former vice chancellor said the militants deserves the Boko Haram treatment

– He also accused politicians of causing instability

Prof Ango Abdullahi has lashed out President Muhammadu Buhari and insisted that he must either wage a war against militants or leave Boko Haram alone.

Leadership reports that the former vice chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University made this remark in Abuja during the launch of  two books written by Dr Hadiza Wada.

The former special adviser on food security under former president Olusegun Obasanjo also criticised those that said Nigeria can never divide and insist it was possible for regions to go their separate ways.

 “There’s nothing wrong with that. So many countries have gone through that before.  So I don’t believe in all these emotion and sentiments that Nigeria is indissoluble.

“There’s nothing like indissolubility in any country. Take Britain, they’ve been a model for 1,000 years of democracy and then a year or two ago, Scotland that had been in the United Kingdom for about 350 years opted to go for a referendum  to get out, same problem with Ireland. Soviet Union was only a super power many years ago. Today, there are 12 or 13 countries there.

“So what is so special about Nigeria?  If we find truly that we cannot develop and guarantee the welfare of our people  as a nation and the solution is to go our separate ways, why not? So you see this is the thing we have to always discuss at all times honestly.”

The professor also lashed out at politicians whom he accused of instability and causing security problems.

“But our greatest challenge today is political instability created unfortunately by politicians and the Nigerian elite. We are responsible for the conditions we’re experiencing today and that we have experienced over the years.

“This is the basis on which we have made slow or no progress in our development and I think we can accept this as a fact and continue to pretend and go round and round and round and at the end of the day, come back to the same spot.”

Abdullahi described militants as economic terrorists and urged the federal government to treat them worse than Boko Haram.

“In the Niger Delta for example who came out openly and said they’re avenging something and that they’re fighting to avenge something? 

“They’re worse than what’s happening in this country, they’re worse than Boko Haram. If you’re not going to fight Avengers then stop fighting Boko Haram.”

Meanwhile, some Niger Delta groups vowed to resist the threat by President Buhari to treat militants like Boko Haram terrorists.

The president had said that the government was open to dialogue with militants in the region but vowed that if negotiation fails, the government would resort to military action like the one given to Boko Haram terrorists.

“If the President at this stage is threatening to use military might when leaders in the region are already appeasing the youths and they had agreed for a dialogue, such statement is condemnable. We will resist such threat from Buhari because we own this country together.

“What the President said runs contrary to what the Petroleum minister told us on Friday when he visited Chief Edwin Clark that the Federal Government was looking beyond a ceasefire. This kind of statement should not be coming from a President who desires a lasting peace in a region that feeds the entire country.”
