Labour attacks FG over rampaging Fulani herdsmen

– The Enugu state chapter of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has described the recent attacks by Fulani herdsmen as “inhuman and callous”

– TUC urged the President to direct the police, the Army and others to stop the herdsmen from further killings

Following another fresh attack carried out by Fulani herdsmen in on Ndiagu Attakwu Akegbeugwu community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu state, the state of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has described the attacks were “inhuman and callous”.

The TUC, in a joint statement by its state chairman Igbokwe Chukwuma Igbokwe and secretary Benneth Asogwa  noted that since security agencies were under the Federal Government, it was the responsibility of the President to direct the police, the Army and others to stop the herdsmen from further killings.

“The congress condoles with families of the victims of the attack on Ndiagu Attakwu community and the people of Enugu State on the attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen. We strongly believe that the sincere intervention of the Federal Government is the only permanent solution to the incessant attacks by the herdsmen, which have threatened the peace and unity of the country.”

It regretted that some people blamed the state government for the herdsmen repeated attacks on communities.

TUC added that the attacks would continue, if the President failed to use his powers as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to stop them

The union urged the police and other security agencies in to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

But a member of the Board of Trustees of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Mr Buba Galadima has urged Nigerians not to hurriedly blame Fulani herdsmen for every attacks in some parts of Nigeria.

Galadima also said any miscreant caught causing trouble or committing heinous crime should be called by their names rather than ascribing it to a tribe. Speaking on a Television programme “Sunrise Daily”he said it is premature to blame herdsmen for the recent attacks in Enugu.

“We must build our nation, if miscreants carry out some heinous activities, we should call them by their name and not ascribe it to a tribe.

“It is common among communities for Fulanis and farmers to have disagreements over grazing, however, they always settle the issues amicably. Also, there are always miscreants in every community therefore, not all the cases of alleged herdsmen killings are actually true. Nigerians must know that you can never see anyone rearing over 200 cattles, leaving them to go and attack a village,” he added.

Meanwhile, governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has signed into law a bill which prohibits the grazing of cattle in the southwest region by herdsmen.

Fayose appended his signature on Monday, August 29 in front of an audience of about 3,000 traditional chiefs in Ekiti state.
